Oroantral Fistula Closure via Double Layer Closure Technique - A Case Series
Abstract
Background: The oroantral fistula (OAF) is a pathological connection between the maxillary sinus and the oral cavity and is one of the unfortunate complications encountered in maxillofacial region. Among various surgical management techniques, closure with double layer flap method using Buccal Fat Pad (BFP) and Buccal mucosal flap to cover the defect has numerous advantages and encouraging results.
Case description: Nine patients with oroantral fistula were operated in BPKIHS from year 2019 AD to 2022 AD using double layered flap closure. Patient’s age ranged from 18 years to 59 years, out of which seven were associated with first maxillary molar while two were associated with second maxillary molar. None of the patients reported with any major complications. The patients were kept under routine follow-ups. No recurrence is noted till date. We intend to discuss the technique of OAF closure, peri-operative protocol in this presentation.
Conclusion: Double layer flap closure seems to be a viable and reliable option for closure of OAF.
